If you were at worship service Sunday, August 9 you witnessed a powerful work of God. That day a group of high school students walked up in front of their entire church body at Eagle Christian Church and confessed they have not been a friendly group, apologized and asked for forgiveness, and invited students to come back. What would lead a group of “selfish” teenagers to do such a “selfless” act? Worship!
This past summer a group of students from Eagle Christian Church went on a trip that would change their lives! They encountered an incredibly powerful week, focused on amazing worship and passionate preaching. And when we encounter a mighty God we change. Period!
So the students knew… things cannot be the same when we go back. And in order to keep them focused and on track they felt the need to confess in front of the entire church body.
Maybe pride is the word that comes to mind when I think of how far our students have come. But not the kind of pride God opposes. I’m talking about Godly pride. The kind of pride a Father has in a son after witnessing his spawn (aka offspring, descendent) help someone in need.
So it is time for us to recognize what God has done and give him the glory. And it is time for us to encourage, lift up and support our teenagers in their hour of passionate living for Jesus. However it is not time to look for fault. I have a saying you will hear me say often, “We are not there yet!” I don’t say that because I don’t think God has done a good thing. I don’t say that because I don’t believe the students are honoring God with their lives and giving their best. I say that, simply, because it can be easy to sit back and notice all the things we are not. I say, “But we are a workmanship of God! And we are moving in the right direction! We know what we want… and we will aim for the target!”
So to the students who made that commitment – We are proud of you! Keep moving closer and closer to the cross! We’re not there yet, but we’re heading in the right direction.
